Developer Test Kits

for Next-Gen Controller

SUMMARY

  • Delivered 20 developer test kits for a next-gen XBOX controller to enable limited early access with a $20k budget

  • Modified part design in Creo to obscure new features and sourced parts from global partners

  • Assembled units for button cycling tests and analyzed data to ensure product reliability and performance

Mission

During my internship at Microsoft, I modified a next-generation XBOX controller design to become “game developer test kits”, delivered to designated game studios. The main goal is to obscure confidential features while achieving functional and aesthetic criteria.

My Role

  • requirements definition

  • design modification

  • global part sourcing

  • assembly of all units

  • preliminary testing

In design modification, my CAD work involves redesigning features on injection molded parts using Creo, and I conducted multiple Design for Manufacturing reviews with an international partner.

In global part sourcing, I used a combination of injection molding, machining, and silicone molding to ensure all my parts arrived within a tight timeline and budget of 20k.

In assembly and testing, I conducted button cycling tests to ensure reliability, and my data served as a baseline for future testing results.

Results

I delivered 20 units of completed controllers at the end of my internship, enabling my team to gather critical feedback from professional game developers.

Huge thanks to my colleagues at Microsoft for their support throughout my internship.
