Martian Settlement
for One Million People
Co-authored a 20-page proposal on building a sustainable Martian settlement for one million people
Ranked #10 among 176 international teams and presented at the 23rd International Mars Society Convention
Summary
Mission
Create a plan for a self-supporting Mars city-state of 1 million people, and propose ways to develop the city-state’s technology, economy, culture, etc.
My Role
Using Fusion 360, I visualized a subsurface settlement with large-scale hyperloop transportation systems on the ground.
I also researched site selection, rotational hydroponics greenhouses, transportation, and emergency management systems. My work is highlighted below.
I also developed our research into an educational card game that resembles Monopoly, with a team that included peers with background in Anthropology and Literature.
We hosted the game with about 60 high school students in a technology summer camp, X Academy, in 2020.
Results
We were the only undergraduate team to win the finalist (#10 /176) and present at the 23rd Annual International Mars Society Convention.
The paper was published as a chapter in the book Mars City States: New Societies for a New World, available on Amazon.
The Complete Work
Huge thanks to my teammates Lucy Shi and Albert Sun.
